Seeds have generously spread to our gravel path between our houses and I have 2 volunteers
growing quite happily there. What a striking burgundy red colour these plants are.I believe this ancient variety is called Hopi Red Dye and is used as a red dye. Amaranthus is grown in tropical areas for its grain, as a leaf vegetable.Our summer's hot and humid weather certainly have made this plant happy. Amaranthus has been used by Aztecs and Incas. Do check out the link the history and uses of this plant are vast and interesting .With the many seeds from the plumes I think these plants could easily take over the entire pathway.

Amaranthus does like to spread it's seeds. I have the Joseph's Coat with the bright yellow color in the middle of the leaves.
I love volunteers, they always seem to do better than the plants I intentionally place. ;)
Love, love that amaranthus. I found it a few years ago, but have never seen it since.
I wish mine would have spread its seeds. It is probably too cold for them to survive.
My small Michigan town does not have a great variety of plant sources.
Volunteers are special, I love them, too! The size of those plants is amazing, love the color, too.
We were just admiring my mom's two plants, and now I know what it's called, lol! It is taller than me, and she let it go to seed so that she can shake the plant, and it will scatter it's seeds everywhere. I thought it was a beet plant?
I know she uses the greens for cooking.

I've loved all types of amaranth for years. I think my favorites are Joseph's Coat and Love Lies Bleeding.
