Amaryllis, re- growing

I had put last winter's amaryllis in the basement after it finished flowering and forgot about it. Last Tuesday when cleaning up the basement and searching for Christmas decorations found the neglected amaryllis; the bulb was still firm..
Ah ha ,I will bring it upstairs water and fertilize it and see what happens, said to myself ....
After a long weekend of working I came home to find last years amaryllis has sprouted.
I am now looking forward to seeing how this beautiful flower re blooms , if I am lucky maybe in time for Christmas.

That is awesome! Do you think if I bought a bulb and started it this week that possibly I would have flowers for January? or does one buy it already flowered and save the bulb for next year?

Well isn't that great!

Hi Rosemary~~ I've heard they're just like other bulbs in that they need that dormant period. You've just confirmed that it's true. Nice going. It's always a joy to have something in bloom during the winter months, isn't it? Fingers crossed for a bevy of blooms on Christmas day.

Are you on Blotanical, Rosemary? I looked but didn't see you. It's easy to join, if you're interested...

That is cool. Dan puts them in the garden over the summer. Then brings it in. You would have to ask him on his blog what he does with it then to get it to flower again. :)

Rosemary, Wow - what a find! I hope you'll remind us later with a post if it blooms for you!!

I'm tucking mine into the basement for a rest, as their leaves die back. Perhaps I'll have something to post with regard to amaryllis later, myself1 ;-)

I'm so jealous. I've potted up last years, but no luck yet.

Congratulations with the rebloom. I have a black thumb with bulbs for some reason.
